Rare Jacobean Oak Coffer c.1620, in breathtaking condition and colour.

The three-fielded panel top, heightened with chequered inlays of Holly and Bog Oak and, when open, is supported by a strap, which undoubtedly saved the hinges from the usual destruction.

The sides, with twin fielded panels and inlay of Holly and Bog Oak, with beautiful wrought iron handles and handle-stops.

The front with elaborate framed twin panels enclosing spiral carving and sinuous 'S' scrolls. Between the panels is a large spiral cartouche. Carving of this period is often naive and crude; however, the carving on this is very fine indeed.

The escutcheon, lock, hinges, Hinge-strap and handles with stop are all original, as is the floor and stiles.

It is very unusual to find a coffer of this age in this condition!

William & Mary (& later) walnut Cabinet-on-stand c.1700.

The stand having a single drawer (restored) and supporting barley twist and reel legs terminating in bun feet, united by a flat crossbanded stretcher. The leg and drawer front were restored in the nineteenth century.

Stands of this penod very rarely survive unscathed, as the worm are particularly keen on walnut.
